NiRA CONGRATULATES MR. TOPE FASHEDEMI ON HIS APPOINTMENT AS PERMANENT SECRETARY

The Executive Board of Directors and staff of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) felicitate with Mr. Tope Fashedemi on his recent appointment as the Permanent Secretary from the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy. Recall that Mr. Tope Fashedemi was a director on the Executive Board of NiRA till the end of his tenure in April 2016 and was a pioneer member of the NiRA Board of Executive Directors.

He was sworn in as a Perm Sec by President Muhammadu Buhari GCFR on Wednesday 18th December 2019.

Up until his appointment as Permanent Secretary, Mr. Fashedemi served as the Director, e-Government in the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy and supervised the production of the Federal Government’s “e-government Master Plan” in collaboration with stakeholders.

The approved deployment of Mr. Tope Fashedemi is to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) - Special Duties Office (SDO).

NiRA wishes Mr. Tope Fashedemi a successful tenure in his new role and looks forward to working closely with the Permanent Secretary to further strengthen the ICT sector in Nigeria and promote the usage of the Nigerian Online Identity (.ng).

 

 

PRESIDENT’S SPEECH


On behalf of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), I say a big thank you to everyone reading our newsletters, engaging and collaborating with us and registering their businesses online with .ng domain names. We appreciate your support in projecting Nigerian businesses online, waving the Nigeria flag in cyberspace and moving the .ng brand forward.

We are now in the yuletide season and it is time to take stock and send out good wishes. On behalf of the NiRA Executive Board of Directors and NiRA staff, our warmest regards, appreciation and good wishes to all, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), various NiRA Stakeholders, Members of NiRA, Affiliates, NiRA Board of Trustees, Service Providers and all the supporters of the .ng brand.

The year 2019 was an eventful year at NiRA. We organized various activities aimed at developing the DNS industry in Nigeria, creating and deepening the awareness of the Nigerian Online identity, Corporate social responsibility, etc. We thoroughly enjoyed hosting and participating at these events.

We collaborated with various stakeholders on initiatives that will develop, contribute and deepen the growth of the Digital Economy in Nigeria. NiRA has always explained and projected that the Internet changes the way we do business. The growth in our digital economy would present opportunities and positively impact the Nigerian GDP.

Indeed for NiRA, the year 2019 had been very busy, resourceful and productive. But it is now time to focus on the opportunities and challenges of the year 2020 and years ahead. We conclude by using this media to wish all the very best of the incoming year 2020 and years ahead.

NITMA MERIT AWARDS 2019

The National Information Technology Merit Awards (NITMA) is an annual event organized by Nigeria Computer Society (NCS) to acknowledge, celebrate and reward corporate organizations and individuals who

  • are committed and outstanding in their various Information Technology (IT) practice,

  • have contributed immensely to the development of the profession in Nigeria.

  • have valid licenses to practice Information Technology (IT) in Nigeria and are registered with the Nigeria Computer Society (NCS), Computer Professional Registration Council Of Nigeria (CPN) and Computer Professional Registration Council Of Nigeria (CAC)

The 2019 edition of NITMA held on Thursday, November 21, 2019, at Muson Centre, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria. Activities at the event included the Presentation of Awards, conferment of Professional Fellowship which was presented to members who had contributed immensely to the growth of IT in Nigeria, and conferment of Honorary Fellowship which was conferred on outstanding individuals who have distinguished themselves through extraordinary service and commitment to IT growth in Nigeria.

The highlight of the event was the IT personality of the year 2019 award which was contested amongst five nominees out of which Mr. Mitchell Elegbe, Founder/GMD of Interswitch was announced the winner.

2019 E-NIGERIA

Industry leaders and stakeholders of the ICT community gathered at the 2019 edition of e-Nigeria which took place from 28th to 29th November 2019 at the International Conference Center Abuja with the theme “Achieving a National Digital Economy”.

The conference, which is the 12th edition, is Nigeria’s annual Information Technology (IT) summit hosted by the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Nigerian President, President Muhammadu Buhari at the opening ceremony of the conference directed all government offices and agencies to go digital in order to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in service delivery and promote more inter-agency synergy. He stated that the Digital Economy is globally expanding at a very fast pace and has transitioned from being a luxury to an absolute necessity. “It is in recognition of this fact that we decided to re-designate the Federal Ministry of Communications as the Federal Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy with a mandate to develop and implement a harmonised and well-coordinated digital economy policy and strategy for Nigeria”.
In attendance at the conference were the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Pantami; Director-General, NITDA, Mr. Kashifu Abdullahi; Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Representative of Speakers, Honourable Lado and executives of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA).
Other discussions at the conference focused on the following sub-themes:

  1. Creating New Job Opportunities and Economic development through Technological Innovation
  2. Harnessing Indigenous Innovation and Creativity for Poverty Reduction in Nigeria
  3. Leveraging Disruptive Innovation for Achieving Good Health, National Security, Anti-corruption, and Sustainable Energy Systems
  4. Improving Indigenous Technological Innovation for Building Sustainable Cities and Communities
  5. Implications of Data Protection Regulation for Open Data, Big Data Analytics, and Smart Initiatives in Building a Productive National Economy.
