NiRA 2021 .ng Reseller Entrepreneurship Programme (REP)

Since the year 2020, COVID-19 accelerated the adoption of internet technologies and facilitated the rapid shift from conventional media of business and leisure to a digital one. This reality presented new opportunities for internet stakeholders and entrepreneurs. Long before the advent of COVID-19,  the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) had been organizing the .ng Reseller Entrepreneurship Programme (REP) and had the most recent REP on Monday 26 July, 2021. The virtual event, facilitated by the NiRA Academy, aimed to empower businesses and individuals to take advantage of the vast opportunities in the domain name industry.

Introducing the event, Mrs. Busayo Balogun, Head Corporate Services of NiRA stated that the number of Internet users in Nigeria had increased to 151 million as at January 2021, underscoring why the domain name sector presents viable business opportunities for entrepreneurs. According to her, “the .ng Resellers Entrepreneurship Programme is an empowerment programme aimed at developing and training entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs about the Domain Name Industry.” “This training would provide insight into the vast opportunities that exist within the Domain Name Industry,” she enthused.

Mrs. Balogun went further to list the benefits of the REP as the opportunity to start or grow businesses within the Domain Name Industry with minimum capital requirement; acquire skills on running an online business; a unique opportunity to network with professionals within the Domain Name Industry and generate income from starting a business online.

Mr. Ikechukwu Ezeji in his presentation highlighted that a reseller “is a third-party company that offers domain name registration services through an Accredited Registrar.” The .ng domain name, which is Nigeria’s country code top-level domain (ccTLD), is under the administration of NiRA and the association has a responsibility to maintain and manage it, according to Mr.  Ezeji. Reseller opportunities are offered by NiRA Accredited Registrars on their platforms. The reseller acts as a bridge between the registrars and registrants who register domain names.

Mr. Ezeji listed the benefits of being a reseller as “immediate financial rewards, low financial investment, minimal company requirement, high returns, and opportunity to become a registrar.” He concluded by highlighting that the Domain Name business space is limitless and presents high business rewards by offering opportunities in web development, web hosting, and application development.

Participants were introduced to the Domain Name System (DNS) and management, taken through the technical aspects of the DNS, its importance in the online environment, as well as the policy around Domain Names. Mr. Mustapha Faniyi of Upperlink Limited, a software development company and a CBN-licensed payment service solution provider, intimated participants on the available opportunities in Domain Name business and why entrepreneurs need to come on board quickly. Also speaking at the event were stakeholders from the web hosting industry Mr. Jude Ogbonna of Smartweb Limited and Mr. Joshua Itebu of TF Host Limited who equally introduced participants to the opportunities in the Domain Name business and took them through steps to start reselling.
