The Board of Directors for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) had announced that ICANN71 will be held as a Virtual Public Meeting due to the continuing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The ICANN71 Policy Forum holds from 14th to 17th June 2021.

There were several pre-ICANN 71 virtual sessions and these were held via Zoom. One of the pre-ICANN sessions was the country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) News Sessions. These held from 26th to 27th May 2021 with the theme ‘DNS Abuse, the ccTLD Experience’. Recall that the ccTLD constituency of ICANN is where the .ng ccTLD resides. So, ICANN ccTLD events and activities are always of major interest to the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA). The sessions focused on domain name abuse, the efforts made by the ccTLDs to combat DNS abuse and the challenges faced by ccTLDs. The speakers at these sessions were from Chile, Botswana, China, Portugal and Puerto Rico. NiRA had spoken at similar events in the past.

ICANN defines DNS abuse as any malicious activity aimed at disrupting the DNS Infrastructure or causing the DNS to operate in an unintended manner. The DNS is the Domain Name System. It was disclosed that the DNS abuse surged during the COVID-19 pandemic, causing a lot of damage. With many activities moving online during that period, new security challenges arose for the ccTLD operators, who had to enhance the security defense architecture.
