PROMOTING THE .NG BRAND

Muhammed RudmanThe .ng promo which commenced on the 24th August 2020, to run for three months is coming to a gradual close on the 21st November 2020. This was the first promo run by NiRA and it was very interesting. The .ng promo offered non-premium second level .ng domain names for registration at a capped cost to applicants of .ng domain names. All participating registrars were advised to promote the .ng brand and make the names available at a pre-agreed price though some NiRA Accredited Registrars offered the .ng domain names at a lower price.

NiRA and the 23 participating registrars (find more details on https://register.ng) embarked on promotional exercises (on social media platforms, radio jingles, BRT buses, print media adverts, web adverts).  We are proud of all who participated in the .ng promo. It was a fine time/opportunity for Nigerians to register the .ng domain names of their choice.

We can all attest that the covid-19 pandemic encouraged many businesses to move online.  This helped many businesses to survive. Businesses had to re-strategize.

NiRA conducted an electronic General Meeting (eGM) to constitutionally amend and update the NiRA Harmonised Constitution based on approved members’ inputs; and to vote on the revised and updated NiRA constitution as proposed by NiRA members, as the proposed constitution of the Association. The online discussions held via the members’ mailing list from Tuesday 27th October to Monday 2nd November 2020 and at the end of the discussions, voting by members started at noon on Tuesday 3rd November and closed by 11:59 am on Friday 6th November 2020.  It is with great joy that I communicate that the NiRA membership voted on the draft NiRA constitution and have agreed on certain changes to be incorporated into the constitution of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA). I congratulate the NiRA membership for the nobel feat. Efforts are on to incorporate the necessary changes to the draft NiRA constitution.

I would request that all join me to appreciate the hard work of the NiRA Constitution Review Committee (CRC) and their commitment to ensuring that the draft NiRA Constitution was made available for voting by NiRA membership. To members of the CRC,  we appreciate your time, resources, energy, commitment and the different roles played by all to ensure the availability of the NiRA draft constitution. I thank the NiRA membership for the robust discussions and participation during the eGM and voting.  This is a great achievement for NiRA that should be applauded.

I have the singular honour on behalf of the NiRA Executive Board of Directors and NiRA Secretariat to felicitate with and congratulate some of our colleagues on the NiRA Executive Board on their recognitions and awards. Mr. Lawrence Olawale-Roberts was recognized by ICANN for his service on the Nominating Committee (NomCom) of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), where he has served for many years.

Engr Ikechukwu Nnamani has continued to win awards and accolades for his contributions to the Telecom Sector in Nigeria and internationally. We are very proud of the achievements of these gentlemen. All these achievements go a long way to promote the .ng brand.
We encourage all to continue to observe the protocols and guidelines for covid-19.  We should continue to be safe and keep safe even whilst online!!!
